My Initial Magazine Sketched Draft

Here is a sketched initial design for my magazine the first official draft will be on my blog shortly when I have access to photoshop as I currently don't have access to photoshop at home. I am aware that there may be alterations made to this preliminary design but this design will allow me to make judgements on what went well and what did not which I can take forward and make the correct changes to my magazine.

Reflection of Skills

Reflection on the skills that I have learnt so far

So far I have got an understanding of photoshop, I have learnt how to make a canvas to the exact specifications that I need. how to create layers and insert images how to remove backgrounds and also how to duplicate any colour into my magazines. There has been 2 tasks were I have used Photoshop so far and these are the first two preliminary tasks the first one was where we had to make a magazine cover with a famous artist/ band imposed on it. This was the magazine cover in which I used Miles Kane I named my magazine Q. The second Preliminary task that I did was creating my school magazine were I used my fellow student Jack Letherland and placed him on front of my school magazine holding a text book.

The second skill I have learnt is in fact how to use a camera and the aspects that come with using a camera. I have learnt how to set up the studio and the lighting I have learnt how to set up a tripod and place the camera securely into the tripod. As well as learning to focus the camera and take several different shots for my school magazine.

Another skill that I have acquired is using and learning and adapting my basic skills to present my work in different ways these include Infogram were I have made a mood board. Prezi were I have posted my audience profile. And Animoto even though its on the second schedule for the coursework I didn't see the harm in posting it on here.

Editing photos is another skill I have learnt editing via photoshop but also editing photos via Apple Macs after they have been uploaded onto the computer off the memory card.

In the continuing weeks my aim is to continue develop my skills that I have learnt so far and to aim to continue to show progress in my media coursework. A way I am going to try and show this by using even more different ways of presenting work onto my blog.

25 Word Pitch Further Feedback

My Responses to the feedback

25 January 10.00 Thank you for the comment Krishna I am glad you like the length of my video, and that you think it would attract my target audience by the images I have used. If there is anything you think I could Improve on please do not hesitate to reply to me.

25 January 12.00 Hi Sanj! I like how you have identified that there is a clear indication of the genre that I am trying to create as I tried really hard to do this. The black and white filter is designed to create edge and it is designed to stand out so I am also happy that you have noticed this. £3.00p is around the price that I am aiming to sell my magazine at. That is a very good Idea Sanj I could try and feature a larger target audience In magazine which would help me sell it to a wider audience. Thank you for your comments, I will definitely corednsider taking action on the last one relating to my target audience.

26 January 14.00 Thank you for your comments Nat, I am glad that you agree it has my own edge. The simple colour scheme is to remain simplistic and Unique. That is some brilliant feedback from you and I will take this all in I do believe that I need to include more information on what my article will contain. 3.00 is also the price I am going to sell my magazine at.

These are just some of the comments that I responded to on my Blog

Target Setting

Targets setting for the week ahead                        Tuesday 19th January 2014

  • My main target for the up and coming week is to conduct further research into the particular style of magazine that I wish to use for my final design, the genre of music that I'm going to research Is "Indie". I am going to do this by looking into related magazine sources that fit the "Indie" genre that I wouldn't normally purchase or be interested in reading. I plan to research into the mainstream "Indie" magazines that are available to buy over the counter,  along with conducting various research into common "Indie" magazines I think it would also be beneficial for me if i conducted research into up and coming "Indie" magazines that are still virtually unheard of by the general public as this will give me a contrast between mainstream "Indie magazines and relatively new unheard of magazines as i believe this contrast will help me to create several ideas into how I could potentially style my magazine.

  •  Another target of mine for the end of the week is to be up to date with the current coursework schedule that I should be, but also to have achieved the level four work that is presented on Mr Smiths and Mr Fords blog. The main areas of this are to have finished the 3 page spread of the in school magazine that we are expected to have finished and to have designed and finished the magazine front cover of our choice and in my case this will be the magazine cover that features Jake Bugg

  • My Third target is to familiarise myself with the programmes and software that I will need to use throughout my coursework the main one of these being Photoshop, As I am relatively new to photoshop I need to learn how to do certain things that I am unfamiliar with the main way in which I can do this is to do something on photoshop in one of my frees and when I'm finishing my current work be sure to remember what I am doing. Another way I can help myself achieve this target would be by reading the bits of the book photoshop for dummies and asking Mr smith and Mrs Hammond for help when I need it.

  • Lastly my Fourth and final target that I have set myself for the end of the week is to look at what makes a successful magazine and look at tips provided by teachers, experts, and editors I believe that It will be important for me to do this because If i can look into what makes a successful magazine I can transfer this research into the work I do in and out of the classroom environment.

                                                               Analysis Of Institution

Bauer Media group is a multinational media company that's headquarters are based in Hamburg, Germany. Bauer is actively involved In 16 different countries around the world. In 1990 H Bauer released the magazine Take a Break, this magazine sits in the true life market of the women's weekly sector and quickly became the market leader. Bauer first ventured into the UK in 1987 with a magazine named Bella was aimed to make an impact in the UK magazine market by mixing previously unseen real life editorial. Q started out as a music magazine published monthly in the United Kingdom. originally the magazine was named Cue after cueing a record to play. But the name was changed as it was unclear and could be thought of as a snooker magazine. The Q brand expanded from just being a magazine to the radio and television. These are all forms of music entertainment that specialises in Indie, Rock and alternative. Q also holds annual music awards known as the Q awards. In 2010 Bauer caused a great deal of controversy with an attempt to unilaterally impose a new contract on all photographers and writers which took away their copyright and off loads liability for libel copyright infringement from the publisher onto the contributor. This type of institution would be perfect to publish my magazine because its a business that is well known around the globe and has published worldwide magazine sensations. Along with the fact that they publish Q as this helps as it gives examples of why this institution is perfect for the type of magazine that I am portraying as I can refer to Q if I need help during the making of my final magazine.

Relevant Magazine Creator

Christophe Brunnquell The creator of "Purple magazine has changed the face and content of many modern day magazines. Mr Brunnquell's magazine were based predominantly on images, this revolution changed the way magazine designers create their magazines. He has provided influence to many people and the way in which they express themselves through design and art and photography. Christophe changed designs of magazines from predominantly being based on writing to expressing creativity and inner passion through the use of images. The style that Christophe uses in magazines give its own unique vibe, This still manages to separate his type of magazines from other competitors. His magazines often use a large proportion of white area space on his images and this has resorted in many people trying to copy such as instagram who try to use templates based on a large areas of white spaces. celebrities such as the Kardashians do this. I like this effect because even though the idea is really basic and simple it looks very professional and separates the magazine from the modern mainstream magazines out there which is what I'm looking to do with my magazine as its for the indie genre.

Relevant Graphical Designer.

David Carson
The American graphic design Chris Carson who is also In fact a director and a surfer is well known for the use of his experimental typography in his innovative magazine designs. Mr carson directed the art for the magazine Ray Gun in which he used a lot of typographic and layout styles which is what he is best known for. In a particular issue of Ray Gun Carson only used a font named Dingbat which to many peoples surprise is a font containing only symbols. However the whole text was actually published in a legible font at the back of the same issue. David Carson left Ray Gun in 1995 to found his own studios David Carson Design in new york city. After David Carson had his own studios he began to attract major clients from all over America these include Pepsi, Ray Ban, Nike, Microsoft, Budweiser and Giorgio Armani. In 2004 his career has fill developed and he became the creative director of the gibes museum of Art in Charleston. Also in 2004 Carson designed the special Exploration edition of Surfing magazine. and quoted that he "changed the public face of graphic design" In 1995 carson released his first book named end of print it sold 200,000 copies and was produced in 5 different languages and soon became the best selling graphic design book in the world.

David Carson inspires me to go from having a plan simplistic design to adding some extra attention to deatail throughout my magazine. especially on the front cover.

Below are four examples of his portraits. Each of the subjects that Schoeller has captured are lit from all sides and from behind the camera. Each Subject is staring directly into the lens creating a very powerful image. When relating it to thirds the eyes and mouth are postioned on the intersect.

I am aiming to make pictures featuring on my magazine almost like a piece of art by taking close up photographs of solo artist in the way that Martin by doing this I am aiming of drawing the audience in to my subjects eyes. Schoeller.

Terry Richardson

Terry Richardson is a well known famous American fashion and portrait designer. Richardson has many reacurring themes in his work, the main one of these being the use of A list celebrities in very plain boring and mundane situations. The reason why Terry differs from a lot of the other photographers is because he is known to use a variety of different cameras including the traditional instant camera. Richardson has had his work in many world famous magazines here are a few examples.... Rollings stone, GQ, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, i-D, and Vice. Terry Richardson likes to stay traditional in his photography and often uses a main white background because by doing this the photos he takes will be solely based on the subject and nothing else. There has been much contraversy around Mr Richardson's work because of the sheer provocative and sexual nature that Richardson expresses in his shoots as he likes to create a Sexual atmosphere. Although there is a downside to this as Richardson has been accused multiple times of Sexual exploitation in young models.

The reason why I like Terry Richardson's Work is purely because he uses plain simplistic backgrounds yet manages to make the subjects look so suggestive and appealing which really interests me, along with that fact that I will be using a similar background when taking my photographs . I am going to try and base my photography for my magazine in a similar image to Mr Richardson.

fashion associated with the Indie Genre

Fashion within the Indie Genre is very varied as everybody likes to see themselves as individuals within  genre. Although many of the items of clothing that the Indie scencesters wear are adaptions or twists of classics from different periods of time. A key example of this is the Harrington Jacket this was originally an iconic jacket of the 1907's around the mod period which many people wore. The Indie scencesters have re designed and re lived this jacket for modern day use along with the standard chequered shirt. Its not just the Harrington Jacket that has became popular again, Many Indie Scencesters have started to add the Denim Jacket to their wardrobe too both male and females.

Many Indie Scencesters have had a recent touch up in the fashion department and have recent started to adapt to oversized basic t shirts which they are accompanying with denim jeans as they are all looking to maintain a high simpilistic effective et attention drawing dress sense. Oversized Tee shirts have come in and out of fashion throughout the years and now its the Indie scencesters how are really bringing them back in force.

In my Magazine I will try to recreate these new In date fashion pieces Especially in the form of the band I am going to create to feature on my article and my front cover. By doing this I will really be able to and attract the Indie Scencesters Audiences into buying and subscribing to my magazine.
